Hello there!

It's a strange and scary time to be an employee. With Amazon being the latest to announce layoffs, the mood this month, as we go into Thanksgiving, is uncertain.

In this edition, we will cover preparing for a layoff, pay transparency, and finding your own strengths, among other interesting stories from the world of work in the last 30 days.

Jumping right in!

To Listen 🎧: How to navigate a layoff

It's the season for layoffs. And while there can be many reasons for a layoff, for the individual, it's always personal, it's always difficult, and there's no perfect way to prepare for it.

Perhaps, the next best thing to do is to hear from those who've been through it and maybe take some heart from the fact that they survived, and even thrived. Here's one you could listen in to.

Extra: Did you know Josh Bersin was laid off multiple times? This was before he became the HR guru you know him as today. You can hear his account here.

Bonuses!

Bonuses are discretionary. Even when one’s basic salary is the same, bonuses can continue to perpetuate disparities in pay. An ADP study reveals that the bonus amount for women was less than two-thirds of the amount paid to men who had equivalent base pay, age, and tenure. And then performance reviews. That’s another place where bias thrives. A 2015 study shows that men earn 35% more performance bonuses than women.

Pay transparency is, undoubtedly, a great step in the right direction. But we must all agree that it is still just the first step.

To Read 🛋️: Should there be a monetary ROI for DEI efforts?

Do you often get asked about how DEI efforts will impact your company’s bottom line?

Professors Oriane Georgeac and Aneeta Rattan who published a paper on this say, “The business case for diversity backfires because it sends a subtle yet impactful signal that organizations view employees from underrepresented groups as a means to an end.”

But theirs is not the only opinion. Check out this article for opinions from different thought leaders on the subject.

Even though it may sound mushy to you, this Thanksgiving, hold a gratitude circle with your team and see how that boosts the overall mood and camaraderie of your team.
